Nearly one hundred years ago Juan Martinez Torres was sworn in as Guam’s Island Treasurer. Note that Tun Juan’s name in the article reads Juan Torres Martinez. It wasn’t until around 1919 when the U.S. Navy did away with the Spanish naming convention (Fathers surname first and then followed by the Mother’s surname) and replaced it with the current naming convention.
