Lukao 2023 CCF

In collaboration with CHE’LU (Chamorro Hands in Education Links Unity) San Diego, we will have some space for attendees of the 2023 Chamorro Cultural Festival (CCF) to sign-in the Guest Registry. CCF attendees will have the option to physically sign the Guest Registry or virtually sign the Guest Registry on the Chamorro Roots Genealogy Project website. A QR code to access the virtual Guest Registry will be released the day of CCF on March 25, 2023.
My objective is to develop a summary narrative on the number of attendees and and create a global map pinpointing the locations of the attendees’ residences by city and state/country.
In ancient times our native ancestors within and abroad from the other Mariana Islands (Låguas yan Gåni) would journey and proceed from one location to another to gather and join in on an event whether for funerals, festivities or competition. Each year, CCF has grown and has become a major event for CHamoru people to gather and celebrate in the United States. I'm not sure if anyone will be sailing into the event, but for sure, some of us will be driving, while others will by flying to the event... LUKAO! Na'lå'la!

To reconstruct my maternal great grandfather’s family tree, I relied heavily on secondary and tertiary sources. In this case, a transcription by Father Mallada of the 1897 census, a transcription of the 1920 census conducted by the Church, and an index card with family names and dates that was maintained by Dr. Jane H. Underwood.

A collaborative project by the University of Guam and the U.S. National Parks Service , which yielded two volumes of narratives. 72 people described their experience. Some of the narratives contain family information.

Carmen de Salas : Jane Underwood Index Card Collection

Carmen de Salas (1867-1940)
An index card of my maternal great grandmother and her children.
It is one of thousands created by anthropologist Jane Hainline Underwood from 1965 - 1992. These cards are located at the Micronesia Area Research Center, University of Guam.
I still have the theory that Carmen de Salas is really the daughter of Rita Aguon Salar born out of wedlock; and, that the Salas surname was a transcription error. Family lore reveals that she that her biological father was Felix (Tun Felis) de Torres. I have written about this before and is searchable on this website. Carmen is also the lineal source of my mitochondrial DNA (MtDNA) haplo group E2a, unique to the CHamoru people. It will be through this type of DNA that will prove whether my theory is correct.
